The high school basketball season is officially underway with major states like California, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas already tipping off and Florida ready to join the mix next week. Things get off to a hot start with November featuring over 20 top tournaments and events.

Over ten years ago, Simeon basketball coach Rob Smith was sitting in his hotel room ahead of a tournament in West Virginia. His phone wasn’t working. He shot a text to his friend across the hallway: rival Whitney Young coach Tyrone Slaughter. It bounced back.

The Lane Tech Boys Varsity Basketball team competed in the annual Chicago Elite Classic, a tournament featuring some of the best teams in the country, with local teams such as Whitney Young and teams from out of state, like Missouri’s Vashon and D.C.’s Gonzaga at Credit Union 1 arena.

The Chicago Elite Classic, the annual two-day event featuring top teams in Illinois and from throughout the country, has announced its field of teams and matchups.

A big change to this year’s Chicago Elite Classic, which will be Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1, will be the location. The event moves from the UIC Pavilion to the 10,000-plus seat Wintrust Arena in Chicago’s near South Side.

The Chicago Elite Classic was created ve years ago by Tyrone Slaughter, Head Coach of Whitney Young, and Robert Smith, Head Coach of Simeon. The idea of the Chicago Elite Classic was birthed after the two basketball teams were fresh from an out of state tournament that both schools attended.
